[The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 50)] "They Sent Them Off" (ACTS 13:1-3) (1.) [v.1] As Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem back to the flourishing Antioch Church, a group of five gifted prophets and teachers arose to continue building-up the community, which included Barnabas and Saul. They were all different ethnically, culturally, socio-economically, politically, yet they were united in exercising their different teaching gifts and prophetic gifts to build up the Lord’s Church. You too have a spiritual gift(s) that the Lord has entrusted to you. *What is that gift from the Holy Spirit? Are you exercising that gift independently and individually? How can you exercise your spiritual gift(s) corporately and edifyingly with other spiritually gifted Christians that complement you? How important is unifying your gift with the different gifts of others within the multi-gifted body of Christ, His Church? How is this unity preparing you to be sent together on the same mission as Christ’s body locally and globally? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.2a] While these five gifted prophets and teachers were worshipping and fasting, they heard the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking. *How is the Holy Spirit speaking to you while you are serving and worshipping Him, instead of before you start serving or worshipping Him? Why do we need to hear from the Holy Spirit before we are sent by the Holy Spirit? Rather than audible noise, how is the Holy Spirit heard through the written Word of God? Rather than a mystical voice, how has the Holy Spirit brought His pressing conviction of the heart through your conscience? How is the voice of the Holy Spirit heard through the voice of other spiritual leaders around you, who are preaching, encouraging, admonishing, rebuking, training, and correcting you? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.2b] The Holy Spirit says to set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which He had called them. *How is the Spirit calling you to be set apart in order to prepare to be sent out for His work? What do you need to be set apart from? What is the Spirit setting you apart for? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (4.) [v.3] Barnabas and Saul do not just get sent off without a commissioned blessing. The commissioning with the laying on of prayerful hands was vital for their mission ahead. *Are you seeking a prayerful commissioning from the whole body of Christ’s Church prior to a big move elsewhere, or acting independently on your own? How important is it that the Church is united around your decision to be sent off for the Spirit’s work? And are you being a blessing with prayerful hands for those called to be sent? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on guidance and growth for the churches and leaders to lead the Korean American community in North Dallas. Scripture: Romans 8:28 (ESV) And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 2 Timothy 1:8-9 (ESV) Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Prayer (by Deacon Jonathan Jeng): Heavenly Father, Today we come before You with heavy hearts as we pray for all the families, businesses, and communities affected by the recent shooting that has deeply shaken the Korean American community and so many around the area. Lord, we ask that Your loving presence surround every grieving family with comfort, strength, and hope during this painful time. Once again, we are reminded that this world is broken and filled with hurt, violence, and sorrow. Yet even in the darkness, we know that we are never abandoned because we have Your guidance, mercy, and everlasting love. Though the world is broken, our faith in You makes us whole. Father, remind us of the promise found in Romans 8:28 – that in all things You work for the good of those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. Sometimes good things fall apart so that better things may come together according to Your will. Help us to trust You even when we do not understand the pain before us. Teach us not to dwell only on earthly desires or personal ambitions, but to seek Your calling above all else. Your word reminds us that You have saved us and called us to a holy life, not because of anything we have done ourselves, but because of Your grace and glory. May we walk faithfully in that calling with humility and obedience. Father, renew our hearts daily and remind us that through Christ we are made new creations. Help us let go of our old identity, fears, bitterness, and brokenness, and instead live in hope and transformation that comes through You alone. Bring healing where there is pain, unity where there is division, and light where there is darkness. May Your love continue to guide the Korean American community, businesses, and all people toward compassion, love, and faith. In Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.

[The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 49)] “Give God the Glory!” (ACTS 12:18-25) (1.) [v.18-20] It’s clear that Herod knew no other king than himself. When things didn’t go his own way, as with the escape of his prized prisoner (Peter), Herod did not hesitate to exercise the power of his order to put to death his guards for their failure. When Herod became angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, he enjoyed the spectacle of the multitudes pacifying his anger with persuasion and pleas for his favor, as he leveraged giving or withholding their food resources. *Are you a king? Then, why are you living and acting like one? How are you living in your own glory as your own king? Are you giving orders like Herod, or obeying orders from Jesus? Are you taking life like Herod, or giving life like Jesus? Do you desire for others to get on your side, or point others to Jesus’ side? How must Jesus be King through your life and lifestyle? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.21-23] Knowing no other king but himself, Herod dressed like a king and then took his seat on the throne like a king. Then, he delivered an oration like a king. As the people praised him for having the voice of a god, he did not deny it. Immediately, the Lord struck him down to his last breath and his body was eaten by worms because he did not give God the glory. *What glory are you taking away from God? Especially with your tongue, how does your speech glorify yourself instead of giving glory to the Lord Jesus Christ? How can we glorify God with our speech (see James 1:19 and 1 Peter 4:11)? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.24-25] Herod’s words were struck down, but God’s word increased and multiplied. New servants of the Word, like John Mark, were taken by Barnabas and Saul from Jerusalem back to their home base church in Antioch. *Is the word of God increasing or decreasing through you? Is God’s Word multiplying or declining through you? How is God calling you to live as servants (like Barnabas, Saul, and John Mark) instead of like kings through your life, lifestyle, words, and actions? How can you be part of increasing, multiplying, and glorifying the word of God through your life? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on Growing a Heart of Sharing the Gospel. Scripture: For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, (1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4) For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (ROMANS 1:16) Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. (2 TIMOTHY 4:2) Prayer (by Elder Patrick Liu): Father God, we thank you for the beauty of your gospel truth, how you were crucified, died, and buried and then you rose again three days later according to the Scriptures, saving us from the penalty of death as a result of our sin and reconciling us with Yourself. Help grow in us a heart of boldness to share this good news and perfect gift that has been given to us freely with those around us so that your saving grace can abound across the earth more and more. Prepare us to be able to speak truth in season and out of season with patience and teaching as we carry and proclaim this good news that has been shared to us. Thank you for yesterday’s blessed James life group gathering, and I pray you continue to bless the Agape life group gathering this coming Saturday. I pray for deeper conversations over your preached Word in our discussion group ministry during lunch and thank you for the birthdays in the month of May as we celebrate in our monthly dessert and birthday celebration ministry during lunch. *TODAY’S PRAISE SONGS! – Practice them and be ready to sing this morning! Praise on, brothers and sisters! (1) Battle Belongs; (2) Be Thou My Vision; (Response Song) What An Awesome God *TODAY’S BREAKOUT DISCUSSION GROUPS after-service in the gymnasium cafeteria – Today, spend some time in your group tables (group# found in the note page of your bulletin) and share the life of the preached Word. Re-read, think through, and share this spiritual food in discussion with one another! [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 48)] "Out of Your Mind Answered Prayer" (ACTS 12:12-17) (1.) [v.12-13] Miraculously delivered from prison by the Lord’s angel, Peter goes to the house of Mary, perhaps knowing that the Church was certainly gathered at her home and praying together for his deliverance from prison. Surprisingly, the door of Mary’s home was shut without any awaiting onlookers for Peter, and the person who eventually came to answer Peter’s knocking was not the host of the home (Mary) or the praying believers, but a servant girl of the home named Rhoda. *Do you really expect God’s answer to prayer? Are you faithfully waiting for it? When the answer is at the doorstep of your life, do you hear it and come towards it? Where in your life is the Lord Jesus knocking at the door that you have yet to come and respond to Him, finding His answer right before your eyes? How are you staying in the house instead of at the door?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.14] The servant girl Rhoda recognizes Peter’s voice at the door, but she does not open the door due to her joy in the moment to go and report to the rest of the Church gathered inside the home that it was indeed Peter standing at the gate. *Do you recognize the Lord’s voice in prayer? Does it fill your life with joy? How have you heard the Lord knocking, and even recognized His voice with overflowing joy through Scriptural reflection, yet still have not opened the door into your gated life? How are you leaving God’s answer to prayer standing at the gate? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.15] When the Church gathered inside the home hears of Rhoda’s report, they think she is out of her mind, crazy, and insane! As Rhoda kept insisting her report was true, they kept assuming alternative explanations like an angelic appearance. What would be a crazy, insane, out of your mind answer to prayer from God in your life? How has God already answered your prayer while you assume alternative explanations for it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (4.) [v.16-17] Peter continues knocking and is finally let in. He describes the Lord’s deliverance, motioning them to be silent due to continued present danger, and specifically instructing them to tell his miraculous account to James (the half-brother of Jesus) and the rest of the brothers, who would become the foremost leaders of the Jerusalem Church. Is your door staying open to invite Jesus inside? Are you listening and being amazed by His continuous answers? Who do you need to continuously tell about how the Lord has answered in prayer? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on Hosanna Life Group ministry & Ministry Teams Scripture: And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. (ACTS 2:42) And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (HEBREWS 10:24-25) Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well. (1 THESSALONIANS 2:7-8) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up to You our covenant life group ministry. We intercede for our AGAPE life ministry, for our JAMES life ministry, for their shepherds the Jeng’s & Deacon Chong. As we devote ourselves to the teaching of Your Scriptures in these smaller groups of the Church, sharing fellowship, the breaking of bread and praying for one another, draw us to stir one another up to Christ’s love for us and the good works prepared to do for Him. Let us not neglect meeting together, as is the habit of some, but encourage one another all the more as the Day of Your Son’s return draws near. Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, grow in us a deep affection and care for one another as those whom Jesus Christ went to the cross for, died for, and rose again for. Because we love each other so much, may our delight be not only to share the gospel but also to share our lives, in covenant life with one another, walking together the narrow road of following Jesus all of our days. Let us grieve with those who are grieving. Let us rejoice with those who are rejoicing, for we are Your body, Your hands and feet connected to each other by the blood of Jesus Christ. Show us what it means to be Your body, Your bride, Your Church, Your children whom You have adopted to be Your family for one another. We pause to give thanks to You for the upcoming baptisms of Jason & Elena. We give thanks for the fervency in prayer You will produce through new prayer leaders for Kingdom Expansion Scripture & Prayer time. Be with them as they dwell upon topics on Your heart, search Your Scriptures, and write-out their prayers. Bless Rev. Hwang & family to Your new call in Los Angeles at Good Shepherd Church. Bless all the hands and feet that have labored in Christ’s love this month in tables/chairs cleanup ministry. Bless the Elders at their end-of-month gathering today. [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 47)] "Now I am Sure that the Lord has Rescued Me" (ACTS 12:6-11) (1.) [v.6] It is amazing how Peter was sound asleep on the very night that Herod was about to bring him out to kill him by the sword, just like he did with James. Even bound in chains to two soldiers, Peter fell into a deep sleep in the peace of Lord. Amid danger and despair, David writes in Psalm 4:8, “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” While Herod restlessly waited and anxiously enforced his maximum-security imprisonment measures on Peter, Peter peacefully slept and was quietly safe in the arms of God. Are you sleeping well in the peace of the Lord? Even with those situations chained to you and unknown outcome of circumstances around you, how is the Lord calling you to be at sleep and at rest in Christ? How does the peace of Christ that surpasses all understanding need to fall upon you today? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.7-9] How must obedience to the ways of Jesus precede your understanding of the ways of Jesus? Although Peter did not know what was going on when the angel of the Lord awoke him, Peter obeyed all the directions he was told to do. How is the Lord waking you up? Are you getting up to follow His directions in His Word or falling back to your former chained life without any sense of direction? Are your chains falling off or are you putting them back on? How can we follow Jesus instead of test Jesus with our reasoning and own understanding? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.10-11] The Lord has opened every iron gate separating us from Him. He may lead us to the opened gate, but we must resolve to walk through it. Are you getting out of your iron gate? Do you know that it has opened for you? Is the iron gate the issue, or are you the issue? How are you becoming more aware that His rescue and answer is right in front of you? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on Hosanna Staff, Officers, and Hosanna Intercessory Prayer (HIP) ministry Scripture: So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. (ACTS 12:5) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (PHILIPPIANS 4:6) Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints (EPHESIANS 6:18) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, as the earliest followers of Christ kept earnestly praying for Peter in prison, may Hosanna be a church where earnest prayer is unceasingly offered to intercede for one another with prayer. Let us not seek to just unload prayer requests on You, but seek prayer that bears the fruit of repentance, obedience, as You, Father God, unload Your grace, mercy, peace, and love in Jesus Christ upon us, so that we may transform our ways into Your ways, and our thoughts into Your thoughts. In prayer, let us not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication stir up in us a thankful heart, letting our requests be made known to You but never seeking an answer that revolves only around us. Just as Jesus taught us how to pray through the Lord’s prayer and showed us His prayerful life with tears, with a thankful heart, with full dependence upon Father and Spirit, with the power that unleashed the miraculous signs and wonders, the fullness of faith and obedience to death, even death on a cross – let our prayers ultimately leave us in our knees, more surrendered to You, denying ourselves, in deeper love with Your only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. At all times, may we pray in the Spirit, keeping alert with all perseverance, interceding on behalf of all the saints. Today we intercede for our Pastor, for our Minister Chao, for Director Trey, Rachel & Ashley serving the children. We intercede for Elder Patrick, Elder Nara, Reserve Elder Heather, for the search for our 3rd Elder to complete the Session, for our Deacons Waywah & Gloria, Chong, Jonathan, Juhae, all the lay servants leaders and our Hosanna Intercessory Prayer team. Make these names as precious to us as the Twelve disciples were to Christ. May they be prayerful backbones of Your body of Hosanna. Thank You for our new visiting friends last Sunday, Michael & Hailey. Continue flourishing our 9:30am breakfast fellowship. Help us come on-time to worship. Give inspiring reflections on Your Word in our breakout discussion groups today, and fill our stomachs not only with food today but with the living Bread of life. Bless the hands of all our table/chairs setup and cleanup servants today and a final time next week. Bless the Agape life group gathering this Saturday. Continue growing our newborn sister Selene in strength, wisdom, stature, in favor with You, alongside all the three precious lives being knit together in the womb – Baby Park, Baby Jeng, Baby Chao. Heal the ill & sick among us. Provide for those who have lost jobs with new flourishing work. Strength our marriages with deeper affections and intimacy in Christ. Provide our singles with a godly spouse in purity and undivided devotion in singleness, as You call them. Earnestly we pray in the risen and powerful name of our Prayer Teacher and High Priest, always living to prayerfully intercede for us at the right hand of the Father’s throne – Jesus Christ we pray, Amen & Amen. *WELCOME to HOSANNA! – Warmest welcome to all of you, especially if you are visiting or re-visiting! [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 46)] Kept in Prison, Yet Never Kept from Earnest Prayer (ACTS 12:1-5) (1.) [v.1-2] Whether being a common Deacon like Stephen, or a prominent apostle like James, both were martyred and not exempt from the dangers of claiming Jesus Christ as their Lord. *How has prayer increased danger, hardships, and suffering instead of eliminating them all? How have you prayed solely about relief and rescue from your circumstances instead of submission and obedience to Christ, even at great cost to you, your family, your career, and even your safety? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.3-4] Herod sought to earnestly please the Jews with political favors by arresting and killing the apostles. It’s strange how the Christian-hating Jews were pleased with this violence yet were offended if it occurred on their holy days of Unleavened Bread and Passover, thus Herod avoided these times. After killing James, Herod knew it would please the Jews even more to do the same to the most prominent leader among the apostles – Peter. Knowing Peter had escaped previously by the Lord’s miraculous intervention (Acts 5:19-24), Herod put four squads – 16 total soldiers – to guard Peter. *Are your earnest prayers pleasing people/yourself, or truly pleasing God? What pleases you about prayer? At the same time, what offends you about prayer? Do you pray earnestly for your spiritual leaders, whom the devil targets foremost? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.5] Peter is in prison again for the third time now (Acts 4:3; Acts 5:18). Two soldiers are chained to him, and the other two are guarding his cell door. Although Peter was kept in prison, the Church kept praying earnestly for him. *With every path forward blocked, shut tight and locked away, why pray? What should you be praying for? What earnest prayer does God want out of you? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on the Breaking of Bread Ministry Scripture: And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. (ACTS 2:42) And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (ACTS 2:46-47) Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. (MALACHI 3:10) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, Easter may have passed, but remind us every Sunday is the Third Day to memorialize the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and causes us to walk in the newness of life in His Name. A mark of that risen life You have gifted to us is in the breaking of bread together. We are not here together just to fill our stomachs with the bread that perishes, but to feed and serve Your people with the living Bread of eternal life. Father God, bless Hosanna’s breaking of bread together. Give us a vision of Your people around Your Table of communion. May all who are thirsty come to drink of Christ’s fountain to never thirst again. May all who are hunger, hunger for righteousness and eat the Bread of life Jesus Christ. May no soul be left hungry at Your Table as we devote to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Day by day, week by day, let us attend Your temple together and break bread together, receiving the food of Your Word and fellowship with glad and generous hearts, praising You and having favor with all people. Then add to this number of Hosanna day by day those who are being saved. Bring all the full tithe of Your people into Your House, that there may be food in Your house. Let us put You to the test with our sacred giving of tithes, and see if You will not open the windows of heaven for us and pour down a blessing until there is no more need. [Easter Sunday] "He Must Rise from the Dead" (JOHN 20:1-10, 16-18) (1.) [v.1-2] What is the stone at the entrance of your tomb? How is God rolling it away, so that you might go in and know Jesus Christ is risen? How can we encounter Jesus’ resurrected presence even from His silent absence in an empty tomb? How can even the silence, absence, and emptiness around you assure you of the risen Christ present with you and in you? Or in the silence, absence, and emptiness, are we concluding like Mary did that the Lord has been taken and His whereabouts are unknown? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.3-10] What is the visible evidence before you of Christ’s risen presence with you? Like the grave clothes that Jesus left behind, with His face cloth neatly folded in a place by itself, how do you interpret the evidence through Christ’s silent absence in an empty tomb? Does the evidence before you and all around you in creation become telling signs that Jesus Christ is not dead, but alive and risen? Then, do we need to see Him visibly to trust in Him invisibly? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.16-18] Like Mary, how do you look for the living Jesus from heaven among the dead tombs on earth? How does the Lord Jesus want to meet you not in the tomb, but out of the tomb? Are you clinging to the descent, or the ascent of Jesus? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on Easter Resurrection Sunday Scripture: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (JOHN 11:25-26) For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures (1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4) And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. (LUKE 24:5-6) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up this holy day of Easter Resurrection, on the third day where You raised up Your only Son our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead into an immortal body, retaining His nail-scared hands and pierced side, yet now a glorified physical body devoid of deterioration, pain, illness, physical limits, and above all, mortal death. Likened to this body, You will gift to us at the last day, where we will be with Christ in glory. Thank You for the gospel of resurrection, to truly come back from the dead and never to die again. Although we shall all face death at the appointed time, Lord Jesus You are the resurrection and the life. whoever believes in You, though he die, he shall still live, and everyone who lives and believes in You will never die. Let this be of first importance to us, to receive it as the apostle Paul did, that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and was raised on the third day all according to the Scriptures. Today, let us all come out of our tombs, and not seek the living Christ of glory among the dead on earth. He is not here in the grave, but has risen. So raise us up with Christ today out of our tombs, our former ways of life that are dead in our trespasses. Raise us up from our death into the new resurrected life in the ways of Your Holy Spirit, to be born again into this blessed living hope of Christ’s resurrection and our resurrection at the last day. By his wounds you have been healed. (1 PETER 2:24) But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. (ISAIAH 53:5) And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.” (MARK 10:34) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, for You so loved the world, You gave Your only Son, so that the many to be made righteous, who trust in dependence upon Jesus Christ will not perish but have everlasting life. On this very good night, death and gore are not the glory of this day, but life and reconciling peace achieved by the perfect obedience and sacrifice of the perfect Passover Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, Christ Jesus, who presented to You, Father God, a bride – Your Church – without blemish, cleansed by His blood as His body, His light, His way in this fallen world. Lift up our eyes to look upon the tree of the cross, where Jesus bore our sins in His own body that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. Not by our wounds, but by His wounds may our healing come! For He was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities. Upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace. By His wounds we are healed! Although they mocked and spit and flogged and killed our Lord, after three days He knew already He would rise, as He is risen today. [Palm Sunday] "You Did Not Know the Time of Your Visitation" (LUKE 19:28-44) (1.) [v.28-34] Although Jesus had entered the city of Jerusalem several times before on foot, on this final occasion He needed to enter differently. He needed a young colt to ride on, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, identifying Himself as the humble King who comes in the humility, fragility, and peace of a weak colt instead of the pride, power, and might of a warhorse stallion. Jesus needs a colt, not a stallion. Do you know what Jesus needs? What is the “colt” that Jesus needs in your life? When He takes it, are you asking like the owners of the colt, “Why are you untying/taking that which is mine?” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.35-40] Jesus needed a chosen colt because He wanted a genuine worshipper. If they remained silent, even the very stones would cry out to worship and praise Jesus for who He was as the Savior/Hosanna entering the city to lay down His life at the cross as the perfect sacrificial offering for all sins. Do you know what Jesus wants as He draws near to you? If you stay silent, what is creation shouting in your place? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.41-42] Jesus’ final entry into Jerusalem wasn’t all smiles and joy, but also filled with tears and weeping at the approaching rejection and spiritual blindness of the multitudes. Jesus weeps over this. Do you know what Jesus feels, what makes His eyes swell with tears? How quickly does our “Praise Jesus!” turn to “Crucify Jesus!”? When have you traded Christ’s peace for your own blindness? What is making Jesus weep as He draws near to you? Do you weep too? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (4.) [v.43-44] Because Jerusalem failed to know the time of Jesus’ visit, there would come days of judgment and suffering, which Jesus already knows. Do you know what Jesus knows, that He is visiting you daily? Are you missing His multiple visits? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on the final week 7 of this Lenten season devotional, “Holy Week” Scripture: And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” (MATTHEW 21:9) So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” (JOHN 12:13) And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!” (JOHN 12:14-15) And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” (MARK 11:9-10) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we rejoice with You yet also weep with You on this holy Palm Sunday, recalling both the joy and tears flowing down on the face of Your only eternal Son our Lord Jesus, our Hosanna Savior, as He entered the city one final time knowing what lied ahead – rejection, suffering, and the cross. Show us the holiness of Christ as we enter this holy passion week. No one takes Your life from You, Lord Jesus, but You laid it down on Your own accord. You have authority to lay it down. You have authority to take it up again! You sovereignly purposed the cross as the greatest demonstration of Your love, for while we were still sinners, You died for us. So as we raise our palm branches of praise and come out to greet You today, may You find a genuine worshipper who cries, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, the promised King to God’s people, the promised eternal Son to David! Behold, our King is coming, righteous and having salvation, humble and mounted on a colt!” Let us shout Hosanna – that You are our only Savior to save us from our sins, save us from our impending death, save us from the wrath of the final judgment to come! Let not our cries turn from praising You to crucifying You, but to trusting You and walking with You in the way of the cross, where we die to sin and live to righteousness, whereby Your wounds we find healing, whereby Your blood we are reconciled to You and one another. Bless our final week of holy week devotions with fasting and prayer. Bless our 9:30am breakfast fellowship with early worshippers. [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 45)] "Every One According to His Ability Determined to Give" (ACTS 11:27-30) (1.) [v.27-28] The love of the Jerusalem Church leaders for their new Christian brothers and sisters at the Antioch Church is apparent. Not only did they send their best teachers to Antioch – Barnabas and Saul – but also their prophets to edify them with the spiritual gift of prophecy like Agabus, who foretold the natural disaster of a coming great famine over all the world. Historically, this famine, a series of poor harvests and subsequent scarcity, is recorded in the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius from A.D. 41 to 54. What an amazing verification and fulfillment of Agabus’ foretold prophetic word to the Antioch Christians! *Who is the Agabus that the Lord has sent to you through a teaching, admonishment, foretelling by the Spirit to warn you of spiritual danger and help you prepare for sanctifying action? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.29] As the Jerusalem Church expressed compassionate generosity in sending their teachers and prophets to Antioch, now the Antioch Church reciprocates their loving concern by sending sacrificial relief funds to help their Jerusalem Christian brothers and sisters prepare for the great famine ahead. *How have you been a recipient of Christ’s compassionate generosity? How is Jesus Christ calling you to reciprocate that selfless and sacrificial generosity to one another, especially to His body, the local Church? How is your discipline in giving, particularly in the tithe and additional offerings, a visible portrait of your worship to God and compassion for His body? Like the Antioch givers, are you determined to give according to the ability God has entrusted to you? What is that ability? Are you being faithful with it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.30] Instead of individually and personally giving to whomever and through whatever means they desire, how do the Antioch Christians teach us how to collect our giving and where to send our giving? How are you entrusting your giving to the elders and spiritual leaders of the Church as a display of godly humility and faith? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on week 5 of this Lenten season devotional theme, “Watching and Waiting” Scripture: And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (MATTHEW 26:40-41) But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (ISAIAH 40:31) Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. (1 PETER 5:7-10) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, as we enter the 6th week of this holy Lenten season prior to the final Passion Week, show us what it means to be “Watching and Waiting” for Jesus Christ, on drawing nearer to the first coming and anticipating with blessed hope of the second coming of Your only Son. He has come to die and rise again, and He will come again with the clouds, with every eye seeing Him, as the First and the Last, who is, who was, and who is to come, our almighty Savior and Lord. Strengthen us to watch and pray instead of relax and sleep. May our prayerful dependence on Jesus keep us from entering independently into all temptation. Our spirit is indeed willing, but our flesh is so weak. By the power of prayer, keep our anxieties cast upon You and Your care for us. Sober our minds and keep our eyes watchful as the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking to devour. Strengthen us to resist the devil by being firm in faith, knowing the same kinds of sufferings are being experienced by our brotherhood and sisterhood at Hosanna and the global Church around the world. For after we suffer a little while on earth, You Yourself will restore us, confirm us, strengthen us, and establish us by Your grace and glory in Your only Son. So Lord, we wait upon You! As we wait, our strength is renewed upon You! Let us mount up with wings like eagles, run and not be weary, walk and not faint, for Your strength will arise within us! Bless our fasting and prayer this week and prepare us for Palm Sunday next week. Bless our breakfast fellowship with many to come earlier and on-time to service. Bless our breakout discussions during lunch with fruitful reflections on Your Word. Bless the Agape life gathering this Saturday with the holy truths of Ephesians. Fill all the needs for servants to serve You on Easter and VBS and the approaching April tables/chairs setup ministry. Bless all the students on spring break with renewed rest and strength. [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 44)] "The Hand of the Lord with the First Christians of His Church" (ACTS 11:19-26) (1.) [v.19-21] How are your hardships, difficult times, sufferings/persecutions, and trials all part of being led by the Lord’s hand and held in the Lord’s hand, like the persecution arising from Deacon Stephen’s martyrdom that scattered the early Jesus followers? When we do everything except the very thing that God wants us to do, how does this limit what the Lord’s hand can do in our lives, just as the scattered evangelists still limited the reach of the gospel by only speaking the Word to Jews? Like the unknown evangelists from Cyprus and Cyrene, how can you humbly, faithfully, and obediently follow where the Lord’s hand is leading you in new ways that can result in unimaginable spiritual fruit? How can your small act of obedience today be a seed for a great act of the Lord’s hand through you? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.22-24] Like the sending of Barnabas to Antioch, who has the hand of the Lord sent into your life to exhort you to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose? Who has God sent you to as His Barnabas, someone full of the Holy Spirit and of faith to see His grace and be glad at the works of His hands? Who are the souls God is sending you to teach, encourage, exhort, and build up in Jesus Christ? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.25-26] Instead of relishing in visible success, fruitful times, or attained knowledge, how is the Lord’s hand humbling you to look for other servants of God who can teach and edify your walk with Christ? Just as Barnabas sought and brought a better teacher, Saul, to Antioch, how can we nurture a teachable heart before those God appointed over us to teach us? How must we be teachable disciples of Jesus Christ, so much so that we ought to be called, “Christian” which means “little Christ/Resemblers of Christ/Christ followers”? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on week 5 of this Lenten season devotional theme, “Walking Toward the Cross” Scripture: For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 CORINTHIANS 1:18) But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. (GALATIANS 6:14) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (HEBREWS 12:1-2) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, as we enter the 5th week of this holy Lenten season, show us this week what it means to be “ Walking Toward the Cross.” The cross is an instrument of guilt, shame, and torture before the world. To live and end up on a cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Show us afresh Your power in the cross – and not any old cross – but the cross that You sent Your only Son our Lord Jesus Christ to hang on and die for the atonement of our sins. Show us Your love poured out on His cross, that it was not the nails that kept Him hanging on it, but Your love with arms stretched wide for us to the end, where Christ died to bring death to all death, and show us the only way to cross over from death to life through His cross. How can be boast in anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ? For His death is now our death to the world crucified to us, and our death to the love for the things of the world. Let us therefore lay aside every weight and sing clinging so closely, and run with endurance the race that set before us, carrying our own cross, denying ourselves, and looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross for us, disregarding its shame, and is now seated at Your right hand of the heavenly throne. Bless our new 9:30am Sunday breakfast fellowship – help our congregants come early and welcome one another to the Lord’s Day. Bless our breakout discussions today with Spirit-filled reflections. Bless the servants who labored in the kitchen prep food for today. Bless the staff as they gather today. Bless the children’s PTA gathering today. Bless those on Spring break this week, with Spirit-filled family time, safe travels, and rest. Bless all the precious life growing in the womb among us. We overflow with thanks to You for delivering sister Selene by Your merciful arms to the Gee’s and to us. Keep us all in Your grace and near Your cross out of Your empty tomb to keep going and making Your disciples, through our risen Lord Jesus Christ, Amen & Amen. |
