[LORD'S DAY RESURRECTION SUNDAY] The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 65): Encourage and Strengthen with the Letter: The Power of Reading, Responding, and Rejoicing in the Word of God (ACTS 15:30-35) (1.) [v.30-31] After drafting the letter is complete, the Jerusalem Church commissions Paul, Barnabas, Silas, and Judas to deliver the letter to the Antioch Church. They arrive in Antioch, gather the congregation, and read the letter. The letter brought clarification, correction, restoration of the grace of the gospel, and instructions on items to abstain from to bring harmony and one accord to the growing mixed Christian community of both Gentiles and Jews alike. Instead of resisting and despising the letter, its message was received with joy because of its encouragement. *When has a letter written for you, received in your mail/email, and read aloud brought joy and encouragement? Has the gospel of grace in the Word of God brought to you joy and encouragement, or sorrow and despair? As the Antioch Christians were spiritually prepared to hear and respond to the Word of God, how is the state of your spiritual preparation? (2.) [v.32-33] Seeing how joyful and encouraged the Antioch Christians were at the reading of the letter, both Judas and Silas further encourage and strengthen the Antioch Christians with many of their own words through their prophetic spiritual gifts. *How can your own words build up or tear down someone? How can your words strengthen or weaken someone? Where must my words be rooted to bring Christ’s presence, strength, and encouragement to others? (3.) [v.35] Whether Silas stayed or departed (issue of missing v.24) does not disrupt the integrity and reliability of Scripture. The focus here is that Paul and Barnabas did remain in Antioch to persevere in teaching and preaching the word of the Lord. *Is true discipleship in following after Jesus a one-stop quick trip, or does it demand your long-term covenant in your relationships, with your local church, with a teachable spirit before your pastor-teacher? [LORD'S DAY RESURRECTION SUNDAY] The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 64): Come to One Accord: The Letter that Keeps Us in Godly Unity (ACTS 15:22-29) (1.) [v.22-23] After James relays his compassionate judgment rooted in the truth of Scripture and a love for the Gentile Christians turning to God, the whole Jerusalem Church concluded that it was good to choose trusted servants to send back, along with Paul and Barnabas, to Antioch, informing them of their concluding judgments, as well as ensuring the integrity and delivery of their written letter. *Are you in one accord with one another? Is it truly good or not good to you in taking part in unifying Christ’s body together under the one written letter – the Word of God in Holy Scripture? Have your judgments been part of unifying or dividing Christ’s body, sending or hindering Christ’s servants? How has God chosen you to be His messenger, carrying His letter/His Word to bring His unity? (2.) [v.24-27] The letter clarified that those false teachers of a graceless gospel operated without ordered authorization from the Jerusalem Church’s leadership. Instead, they said to listen to the true teachers of the gospel, Barnabas and Paul, alongside the witness of Judas and Silas, who risked their lives for Christ. *How can you clarify unwarranted claims against the grace of the gospel? To guard the purity of the gospel and unity of the gospel, are you risking all of life for it? Why or why not? Is Christian unity worth risking your life? (3.) [v.28-29] The letter closes with Holy Spirit-guided instructions of grace in love to help bring Jewish and Gentile Christians together, telling them to abstain from unclean and immoral things. *What is the Spirit calling you to abstain from? How can your conduct to abstain or to continue in them either help or hurt the body of Christ? [End-of-Summer HOLY COMMUNION LORD'S DAY RESURRECTION SUNDAY] The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 63): Speak the Truth in Love: Agreeing with the Prophets and Unifying Christ’s Body (ACTS 15:13-21) (1.) [v.13-15] James, the leader of the Jerusalem Church, now speaks and makes a final judgment on this debate. Instead of depending on his personal opinion, he verifies that the words of Peter(“Simeon”) are true because they agree and align with the prophecy of Amos 9:11-12. *When facing hardships and challenges in your life, has your speech and response been in agreement with the Scriptures? Or are you being guided by your own thoughts and opinions? How is Scripture realigning the way you speak with a standard of truth by which everything is measured? (2.) [v.16-18] James points out that the prophet Amos spoke about God rebuilding the fallen tent of David, where all the Gentiles whom God calls will seek the Lord and be a part of that rebuilding project. *Can you speak today of God’s unfolding plan for your life to rebuild His fallen house with all kinds of diverse people outside your own heritage and boundaries? How must this plan of God transform the way we think, speak and act as His instrument to accomplish this global mission? (3.) [v.19-21] With the truth of Amos’ prophecy, James makes His judgment with Christ’s compassion and love to honor both Gentile and Jewish believers alike, not making it troublesome for both groups to turn to God. *How can you speak the truth of Scripture in the love of Christ today with your decisions and judgments? Originally from southern California, Pastor Peter graduated from UC Irvine with a degree in economics and began working in the field of accounting. He was called by the Lord into pastoral ministry and completed his studies in apologetics and biblical studies at Talbot School of Theology while serving as a Youth Pastor of Korean Westminster Presbyterian Church in Orange County, and as Executive Pastor and Interim Lead Pastor of Newsong Church in Fullerton, California. During college, Pastor Peter’s handsome looks landed him as the token Asian extra for the drama “Days of Our Lives” television program for three years. He loves to eat spaghetti, meatballs, Texas toast, and Dr. Pepper. [BACK-TO-SCHOOL BLESSING LORD'S DAY RESURRECTION SUNDAY] The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 62): Break the Yoke with the Grace that Frees (ACTS 15:6-12) (1.) [v.6-7] Although there had been much debate, how did the apostles and elders not resort to becoming divided? How did they break up the debate with humbly submitting to and listening to God’s voice? *When disagreements and conflicts arise in your family and in the church family, how can we find a solution through openly gathering together around the issue with spiritual maturity, patience, and prayer instead of ignorance, gossip, and division? (2.) [v.8-11] What is the evidence that God has given that demands no distinction be made between how Jews or Gentiles alike are to be saved? Were even the forefathers of the faith successful in being saved by the works of the law? *In what ways are we making unhealthy distinctions and comparisons between ourselves and others? As God cleanses the heart only by one way – by faith – how is the health of your faith? How have you tested God by withholding grace and distinguishing yourself differently than any other sinner saved by His amazing grace? (3.) [v.12] Debates are full of talking and shouting over one another. Yet what happens after God’s voice speaks through Peter? Who did they start listening to? *How have you been too quick to speak and too slow to fall silent and listen to the Lord? How can you step back to listen and observe where God is actively moving, saving His people, and working outside your comfort zone? [v.1-2] How were these certain men from Judea adding unnecessary requirements to the gift of salvation in Jesus Christ? How did Paul and Barnabas react to it? What did the congregation of the Antioch Church decide to do about it? *Is Jesus enough for you? How do we not deny Jesus, but still need to add to Jesus in order to be satisfied with Him? Why is being Christian not about being circumcised anymore, or following the customs of the Old Testament law? What are your “laws” that keep you from the freedom of embracing the grace of the gospel as all-gift? (2.) [v.3] Instead of focusing on the debate and arguments, what did Paul and Barnabas do as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, and what was the result? *How can you put the focus back on the power of God at work through the grace of Jesus Christ? Can you describe in detail your own conversion to Jesus? What is your testimony of transformation that brings joy to all the brothers and sisters in Christ? We are called to gather, grow, and go together in following you God, gathering wisdom from your scripture, growing spiritual fruit from our behaviour and hearts being changed by your spirit, and going to serve others in your Holy name as you have commanded us. As the children are being readied to go back to school, may you prepare their hearts and their minds, and guide them in your holy spirit. May we the congregation be reminded that we too are on a lifelong spiritual learning journey, a journey that is not finished until we are by your side in heaven, that we are here to learn and grow in your scripture. May we look to your word and your promises as a guiding light to follow, and may we constantly seek You God through supplication and prayer. I pray for blessings on the children to grow and be strengthened by Your holy spirit. I pray for protection for those playing volleyball this Saturday, that it will be a good time of fellowship in your name with other followers of Christ.
