Pastor Mark has been a vital part of helping get Hosanna chartered into our denominational family as an official church, and has particularly done a lot of work in editing our bylaws. Rev. Mark Story grew up in San Angelo, Texas and has lived in Texas his whole life. He received an undergraduate degree in Political Science from Southern Methodist University and a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. Pastor Mark is a “second career” pastor, practicing law in Dallas for almost 25 years before becoming the Executive Director of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas in 2004. He has been passionate about the ECO Presbyterian denomination from even before its official organization and Highland Park was among the first wave of churches to join. Pastor Mark served as Moderator of the ECO Presbytery in 2017 and currently is a member of the Ministry Partnership Team of the Presbytery. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Dubuque Theological Seminary and proudly became ordained as an ECO Pastor just as he was winding down his career as Executive Director of Highland Park. He continues to serve as an Assistant Pastor at Highland Park on a voluntary basis. Mark and his wife, Bettie, have two grown daughters and five grandchildren. *Let us remember Pastor Mark in our prayers and be ready to receive God’s Word through him. *2025 “LIFT UP YOUR EYES” (John 4:35) HOSANNA FALL RETREAT, 10/10-12 (Fri-Sun)! – "Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? *UPCOMING NEXT WEEK –
*TODAY’S PRAISE SONGS! – Practice them and be ready to sing this morning! Praise on, brothers and sisters! (1) Saving One; (2) I Will Wait for You; (3) Christ Be All Around Me *TODAY’S BREAKOUT DISCUSSION GROUPS after-service in the gymnasium cafeteria – Today, spend some time in your group tables (group# found in the note page of your bulletin) and share the life of the preached Word. Pre-read, think through, and share this spiritual food in discussion with one another! “Learn from Joseph, for God was with Him” (ACTS 7:9-16). (1.) [v.9-10] What did the jealous brothers of Joseph do to him (v.9)? Even when Joseph was imprisoned in Egypt, who was with Joseph, just like what had happened to Abraham in Mesopotamia (v.9; see prior v.2)? How did God turn everything around for Joseph (v.10)? Why was Deacon Stephen preaching about Joseph in view of what has been happening to him, the apostles, as well as what had happened to the Lord Jesus Christ at His betrayal? Like God did for Joseph, how is God with me right now in my “Egypt”? Like He did for Joseph, how has Christ rescued me, given me favor and wisdom, and one day make me His co-heir reigning with Him as His servant over all His household? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.11-13] What did God do to show Joseph’s brothers the consequences for their sins in having sold their own brother out of their jealousy (v.11)? Even through His judgment, how was God preparing Joseph’s brothers in their travels to reconcile with Joseph (v.12)? Since his own brothers do not recognize him, what does Joseph do on their second visit (v.13)? How is God showing me the consequences for my sins to lead me into a humble confession of my sins? Even through judgment for sin, how is God preparing me to be reconciled to Him and to one another? Do I recognize who I sin against? Is it not just someone, but the Holy One of all? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.14-16] When Joseph forgave his brothers, what did he do that showed his desire for a complete reconciliation with his entire family (v.14)? Because of this family reunion and reconciliation under Joseph’s rulership, how did God grant Jacob a blessed life, including his final burial location (v.15-16)? How is Christ calling me not only to forgive, but also to restore and reconcile a broken relationship, if the power to do so depends on me? Because of my initiative in Christ to forgive, reunite and reconcile broken relationships, what kind of blessing awaits me? *UPCOMING (*notice some dates may have changed) –
*UPCOMING HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY TO YOU FROM OUR HOSANNA FAMILY! We celebrate you and love you in Christ so much! (*Let us know if we missed your birthday! We sincerely apologize) –
*KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on the 2025-’26 Candidates for Ordained Office of Elder and Deacon. Scripture: And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed. (ACTS 14:23) For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. (TITUS 1:7-9) As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. (ACTS 16:4) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up to You the 2025-’26 candidates for your ordained offices of Deacon and Elder in Your beloved Church. We thank You, Holy Spirit, for guiding us through the season of nominations, putting forth the names of those whom You have called to Your precious harvest. We thank You for candidates Patrick Liu, Nara Jeng, Juhae Park, Jonathan Jeng, and the covenant term renewals of Deacons Chong Choe, Gloria Gee, and Waywah Gee, as well as the legacy of faithful office and service that Elder Heather leaves before us all. Father God, as we pray over the candidate profiles and prepare for the election next Sunday, help us to obey Your holy Spirit. As in the days of the New Testament Church, we appoint elders and deacons with prayer and fasting, committing them to You, Lord, in whom they have believed. For our future Session and Elders, we ask they continue to hold the biblical standard as Your steward, be above reproach, not arrogant or quick-tempered, nor a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain. But rather, but all our officers be hospitable, lovers of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. May they hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that they might be able to give instruction in sound doctrine to the congregation, as well as rebuke those who contradict it. We pray for the congregation to respect and observe the decisions of our Elders especially, and esteem them highly in love, so that Your Church might be put into godly order to grow in grace and peace, through our chief Elder and Overseer of our souls, Jesus Christ our Master we pray, Amen & amen.

Pre-read, think through, and share this spiritual food in discussion with one another! “Be Sojourners for an Eternal Land” (ACTS 7:1-8). (1.) [v.1-3] At that time, the holy temple and promised land were the only places known for God’s presence appearing to His people. Yet, when and where did Deacon Stephen claim the God of glory appearing (v.2)? At that time, what did God command when He appeared (v.3)? Where has God’s glorious presence first appeared in my life, even before I ever realized it? How have I confined God’s appearing to my earthly “temple” and “land,” only realizing Him in a certain location, time, or circumstance? When I am in God’s glorious presence, what does He command me to do, just as He commanded to Abraham? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.4-5] How did Abraham initially disobey God’s command to leave his homeland and his relatives to the land the Lord would show him (v.4)? When God finally moved Abraham out to His promised land, what did He not give him, and why (v.5)? How am I initially disobeying the Lord’s command to leave all behind and follow His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ? How is God teaching me not to rely on outward evidences or proofs or conditions, but wholly trust in His ways for my life? How is God keeping me from making an idol out of His blessings and promises, such as a child for Abraham? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.6-8] What did God purpose His people to be in His promised land – permanent citizens or temporary sojourners for an eternal life (v.6)? What was the covenant sign from the Lord to mark out His people, that He would be their God and they belonged to Him as His people? How am I living like a permanent resident on earth with a temporary citizenship in heaven, instead of a temporary residency on earth with a permanent home in heaven? What signs and marks do I have that I belong to creation instead of to Christ? *UPCOMING (*notice some dates may have changed) –

*KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on the 2025-’26 Candidates for Ordained Office of Elder and Deacon. Scripture: Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. (1 TIMOTHY 4:14) For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. (2 CORINTHIANS 4:5) His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ (MATTHEW 25:21) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up to You the 2025-’26 candidates for your ordained offices of Deacon and Elder in Your beloved Church. For all the candidates and officers alike, help them not neglect the gift You have given to when the council of elders laid holy hands of prayer upon them. For all You will ordain, may they never proclaim themselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with them as Your servants for Jesus’ sake. Until that last day when we all, as faithful diakonos – deacons of the Lord, will be before You, may we hear the words of our Master, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your Master.” Ordained and unordained alike, as we all serve together as servants of Master Jesus, may that joy be ours. May we all enter into this eternal joy of heaven, through the Ordainer and Caller of all His servants, Jesus Christ our Master we pray, Amen & amen. *WELCOME to HOSANNA! – *Warmest welcome to all of you, especially if you are visiting or re-visiting! Pre-read, think through, and share this spiritual food in discussion with one another! “Gaze into the Face of Deacon Stephen, the Face of An Angel” (ACTS 6:8-15). (1.) [v.8-10] What was Deacon Stephen full of, and what did it cause him to do among the people (v.8)? When some prideful debaters of that day rose to dispute the gospel with Stephen, what could they not do (v.10)? Recalling who Deacon Stephen was and how he was chosen to serve the complaints of God’s people, how does my character in serving Christ influence the fullness of His grace and power in me, or the emptiness of His grace and power in me? When the gospel is debated and disputed today, how does the Spirit help me to speak with such irresistible wisdom that no one can argue with it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.11-14] Because the debaters could not win against Deacon Stephen, what tactic did they turn to (v.11-13)? What were they accusing Deacon Stephen of saying (v.14)? If I am truly filled with Christ’s grace and power and living as His wise diakonos (servant), should I be accepted in the world or opposed by the world? How is the holy Spirit giving me wisdom to speak truthfully, lovingly, and courageously to those who debate and dispute the gospel of Jesus Christ? Am I on the side of a debater against the gospel or a defender of the gospel? Like the debaters, how has one sin funneled down to committing many more sins in my life (bribery, lies, false witnesses)? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.15] Why were they all gazing at the face of Deacon Stephen? In times of crisis, hardship, misunderstanding, etc. how does the holy Spirit make our face reflect the perfect peace, glory, and fearless trust in Christ alone? *UPCOMING (*notice some dates may have changed) –

*KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on the 2025-’26 Candidates for Ordained Office of Elder and Deacon. Scripture: This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— (TITUS 1:5) Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. (1 TIMOTHY 3:8-9) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (PHILIPPIANS 2:5-8) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up to You the 2025-’26 candidates for your ordained offices of Deacon and Elder in Your beloved Church. We thank You, Holy Spirit, for guiding us through the season of nominations, putting forth the names of those whom You have called to Your precious harvest. Holy Spirit, continue to help us submit to You and obey Your leading and filling throughout this process. Be with the candidates and fill them with the fullness of Your Spirit, faith, wisdom, and humility as they prepare to take office. We know the reason why You have left us here in Carrollton and this particular body of Christ, so that we might put what remains in order for Your Church, and appoint elders as You directed us. Likewise, may all Your Deacons grow to be above-reproach, dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to substances that will harm Your testimony and witness, not greedy for dishonest gain. May all Your servants hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. Above all, may we all have this mind among ourselves, which also was in Your only Son Jesus Christ. Just as He was true God yet did not consider His divine equality as a privilege to be used, may all our ordained officers never find their worth in their position or privileges to be grasped, but may they empty themselves to take the form of Your servant, humbling themselves to obedience as the Lord Jesus did, even obedient to death on a cross. We entrust these officers to You for another year of Your mighty hand on the move to do great things here at Hosanna, through King Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen & amen. *WELCOME to HOSANNA! – *Warmest welcome to all of you, especially if you are visiting or re-visiting! Pre-read, think through, and share this spiritual food in discussion with one another! “Deacons: Servers of the Lord’s Table” (ACTS 6:1-7). (1.) [v.1-2] When the disciples of Christ were increasing in number in those days, what arose to become such a problem that it reached the ears of the twelve apostles and made them consider giving up preaching the word of God (v.1-2)? In what ways have I raised complaints without serving to solve them? In what ways have my complaints hindered the ministry of prayer and preaching the Word of God? How can I move to solve complaints and grumblings arising in the church, rather than become part of them? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.3-6] How did the apostles go about fixing the problem of oversight in the daily distribution to the widows (v.3-4)? What were the qualities they looked for in choosing the seven table-servers (v.3-5)? How did they dedicate them to this ministry (v.6)? What defines and qualifies a true servant (deacon) of God? Is God primarily looking for ways I can serve Him with my talented services, or who I am before Him in my Christlike character? In what ways can I focus on my character more than my complaints, charisma in giftings, or what I can or cannot contribute in serving the Lord? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.7] What happened when the complaints were served and the apostles were able to fully devote themselves to the ministry of prayer and teaching the Word (v.7)? How can I help my spiritual leaders put their primary focus on the ministry of praying and teaching the Word of God to me and to others? *UPCOMING (*notice some dates may have changed) –

Pre-read, think through, and share this spiritual food in discussion with one another! “Rejoice that You are Counted Worthy to Suffer Dishonor for His Name” (ACTS 5:34-42). (1.) [v.34-37] How did Gamaliel – a respected teacher of the law and spiritual leader of that day – stand up against the rage and desire to kill the apostles by the temple leaders, and what example did he give for the temple leaders to consider? How has the holy Spirit stood up against my moments of rage or anger, and how has He brought calm and gentleness to bring me back to my senses? What are some examples in my own life that have brought damage, dispersion, and destruction due to uncontrolled rage and anger that was acted upon without a sound mind in Christ? How much more different is Jesus to me than Theudas or Judas the Galilean, both who came to be nothing? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.38-39] What was Gamaliel’s advice to the temple leaders in asking them to leave the apostles alone? How have I known a plan in my life has been the undertaking of my own invention or the movement of the plan of God? How have I been found opposing God instead of submitting to Him? How have I been found passive towards God instead of active on His mission? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.40-42] What did the temple leaders do before they released the apostles (v.40)? Yet, with what heart, mind, and action did the apostles leave their presence (v.41-42)? Even in dishonor and my suffering, how can I rejoice? *UPCOMING (*notice some dates may have changed) –

*KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on the 2025-’26 Ordained Spiritual Leadership. Scripture: For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. (LUKE 22:27) For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (GALATIANS 5:13) Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. (EPHESIANS 5:21) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up to You once again this sacred season of raising Your next ordained servants in to Your offices of Elder and Deacon for the 2025-’26 year of our Lord Jesus Christ. Holy Spirit, thank You for guiding all those who casted a nomination, prayed and fasted for a potential candidate to office. We acknowledge it was You, Holy Spirit, who gave notification of a name, of a face, of a memory and moment of Christ-exuding character and conduct inspiring to meet the above-reproach qualifications to these blessed offices of Your Church. Lord Jesus, we acknowledge You are the Master, Shepherd, and Head of this particular Church, and You will choose through us those You desire to advance Your Kingdom work through Your Church for this appointed time. We thank You in advance that You have already chosen and called and equipped these Elders and Deacons for this next season. As You declared, Lord Jesus, you came among us as the one who serves tables instead of reclines at one. May these next servants be great because they are last. May they not use their freedom and authority to serve as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another in humility, compassion, and gentleness. May we, as both lay and ordained servants like, learn to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ and flourish Your peace in all circumstances, for we are all one in You and for Your Cause. Through our Suffering Servant and Chief Shepherd, Overseer, and lead example of eldership and deaconship, Jesus Christ we pray, Amen & amen. |
