[GRADUATION APPRECIATION SUNDAY] The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 52): John Left, But They Went On: The Test of Endurance (ACTS 13:13-15) (1.) [v.13a] The bold rebuke of the magician Bar-Jesus from Paul is the singular event that shifts the focus of the book of Acts and nearly the rest of the New Testament upon the rising spiritual leadership of the apostle Paul. The term “Barnabas and Saul” is no more and is now replaced with “Paul and his companions.” From being led by Barnabas into the Christian community (Acts 9:26-28), Paul now rises to lead Barnabas and his companions to plant new Christian churches. From Paphos, they sail to Perga in Pamphylia, a 175-mile trip on sea that could have taken up to 50 hours with treacherous winds and sea storms (today, this trip would be equivalent to a 35-to-50-minute airplane ride). *If you are a follower of Christ, how are you rising to be a leader for Christ? Like Paul, how is God shifting your position from being led by “Barnabas” to rise and lead Barnabas with your unique spiritual gifts? How is the Holy Spirit growing you out of spiritual infancy into spiritual adolescence and adulthood, where you are growing to serve and lead with His influence? Everyone carries the influence of spiritual leadership – we are either spiritually influencing others to Christ or away from Christ. Which way is your influence going? How is the Lord testing the direction of your spiritual leadership? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.13b-14a] Arriving at Perga, their assistant John Mark decides to leave them and return to his home in Jerusalem. This was a disappointment to Paul, as he later explains his disagreement with Barnabas to take John Mark again on another missionary journey (Acts 15:38). As we stay on mission with Jesus, some will leave the mission of Jesus, and hurt the mission as it most likely did in the case of John Mark’s departure. *Even when others leave, will you stay? Will you press on with the Lord? While others are unfaithful, will you stay faithful? When was a time someone departed from the ministry that left disappointment and damage to the Lord’s mission and the Lord’s church? Compounded with the desertion of John Mark, Paul faced another challenge with his health as he traveled further inland into Perga’s marshy terrain and up the grueling 100-mile trek over the Taurus Mountains to reach Antioch in Pisidia, 3600 feet above sea level. The journey exposed him to rampant bandits and tropical illnesses (like malaria), where Paul describes a severe “bodily ailment” (Galatians 4:13-14) he had upon planting the churches in Galatia, beginning at Pisidian Antioch. *How has physical illness tested your endurance to stay on the Lord’s mission to reach your Pisidian Antioch? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.14b-15] Most likely sick with a tropical illness and exhausted from the 100-mile marshland and mountain trek to Pisidian Antioch, Paul and Barnabas sit down in the synagogue on the Sabbath to honor the day of rest in worship. Yet suddenly, the rulers of the synagogue invite them to speak a word of encouragement. Instead of declining, Paul stands ready to preach one of his longest sermons in the book of Acts. *Even in physical illness/exhaustion, are you standing ready for an opportunity to proclaim Christ? Will you be too tired or too busy? How is God testing your readiness to serve Him? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on 2026 graduating children, students, youth, college, and postgraduates.

[PENTECOST SUNDAY & MEMORIAL/FALLEN HEROES APPRECIATION] The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 51): Make Straight the Crooked Paths (ACTS 13:4-12) (1.) [v.4-5] As the first commissioned missionaries from the Antioch Church, Barnabas, Saul, and their assistant John Mark sail by boat to Cyprus (the homeland of Barnabas [Acts 4:36]), where they proclaim the Word of God beginning with all the synagogues of the Jews. Synagogues housed copies of the Old Testament Scriptures and were places where Jews were taught the Old Testament. Yet they did not teach Jesus Christ to be the fulfillment of Old Testament promises. Jesus Himself was customarily unwelcomed at synagogues as He challenged their crooked understanding of Scripture and rejection of Him as the promised Savior/Messiah. Yet, these missionaries resolved that the Word must be proclaimed first to these Jews who needed to return to a straightened understanding of the Word. *How is the Word of God doing the same with you? How has the Word showed the crookedness of your understanding that you once thought was correct/straight? What are you doing about it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.6-8] When Barnabas and Saul had proclaimed the Word of God as far as Paphos, the capital city of Cyprus, they met a magician and false prophet named “Bar-Jesus” (meaning “son of god who saves”), who sought to oppose them and hinder their meeting with a high-ranking Roman official named Sergius Paulus, who desired to hear the Word of God from them. *When the Word of God has been desired to be heard and desired to be proclaimed to you or through you, what is opposing it? What is resisting it? Why must resistance and opposition to the Word of God be expected in the life of a Christian? How can we respond to the activities of “Bar-Jesus” in the world with our proclamation of “Christ-Jesus” for the world? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.9-12] Saul, who will now be called Paul from this point forward, cannot stand still at the opposition of Bar-Jesus. Filled with the Holy Spirit and looking intently at him, Paul rebukes this false prophet and magician as a son of the devil, full of deceit, and making crooked the straight paths of the Lord. He then hands down the Lord’s judgment of a temporal blindness upon Bar-Jesus, while Sergius Paulus has his spiritual eyes opened to believe in the Lord. It is this bold rebuke that gave rise to Paul as the prominent spiritual leader among his missionary companions and the foremost apostle whom God used to take the gospel to the ends of the earth. *How has the Holy Spirit brought godly rebuke into your life? How is the Lord teaching you to rebuke others in truth and love to make straight what is crooked? How can our godly rebuke be the spiritual breakthrough that others need to hear? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on Growing a Heart for next generation. Scripture: Matthew 18:3-4 (ESV) and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Mark 10:15-16 (ESV) Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them. Psalm 116:5-7 (ESV) Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you. Prayer (by Elder Nara Im Jeng): Heavenly Father, We come before You in humility and awe. You are gracious and righteous, full of compassion and mercy. We praise You, for Your heart is gentle toward Your children. Lord, You are good and faithful. May we come before You with childlike hearts. Make our hearts innocent, trusting, and humble before You. Father, we confess that we often approach Your Word with pride, doubt, distraction, or hardened hearts. We rely on our own understanding instead of trusting You completely. We confess that we do not always receive Your truth with the sincerity and openness of a child. Forgive us, Lord, and remove every proud and stubborn spirit within us. Cleanse our hearts from unbelief, self-reliance, and spiritual dullness. May we hear Your Word with tenderness and obedience. Create in us pure hearts that gladly receive Your Word. Merciful Father, we thank You for Your patience, love, and kindness toward us. Thank You for speaking to us through Scripture, guiding us in truth, and calling us Your children. Thank You for Your unfailing love and gentle care that bring rest and peace when our souls are weary and troubled. Thank You for the gift of salvation through Christ and for the privilege of drawing near to You without fear, for Your kingdom is open to the humble and lowly. Lord, we ask You to shape our hearts to be like children before You—full of faith, eager to listen, quick to obey, and wholehearted in love. Let us receive Your Word with sincerity, humility, and joy. As you call us to be your children, would you give us a growing heart for children and for the ministry that nurtures them in Your truth. Teach us to love, serve, and guide them with patience, wisdom, and compassion, so that the next generation may come to know You deeply and walk faithfully in Your ways. May our church be a place where children are welcomed, cherished, and led closer to Christ. [Baptism Sunday] "Baptism: A Circumcision Made without Hands" (COLOSSIANS 2:8-15) (1.) [v.8-10] As the apostle Paul unraveled the preeminence of Jesus Christ over all creation (chapter 1), he now moves into warning of the heresies against Jesus Christ within their congregation (chapter 2). The Colossian Church had received Jesus Christ as their Lord, walking in Him, and were being rooted and built up in the faith with thanksgiving. Yet they were being threatened by Colossian philosophy, empty deceit, and human tradition stemming from elemental spirits of the world. *What are you being taken captive by from deceptive ideas and false teachings of the world, especially concerning who Jesus Christ truly is? In Christ, what can you be assured about the full divinity and sinless humanity of Jesus? How does this assurance fill you to live a thankful and obedient life under His rule and authority? Why are the full deity and humanity of Christ the single most important declaration of the gospel/good news? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.11-12] From the time of Abraham, God’s people were marked out to belong to Him with a painful covenant sign in the flesh (circumcision) given to all male infants on the 8th day of their birth and adult male converts to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Now in the time of Christ, we too are circumcised but not with human hands. Now in Christ, the mark of belonging to God is not done painfully with the spilling of blood, but painlessly through the waters of baptism that carry us from our burial to a raised life of faith in Christ. *Have you and your children been marked with the new covenant sign of baptism with water, identifying you and your household as belonging to Jesus Christ? Like spiritual circumcision, how is Jesus cutting away the flesh of your sins and carrying you into a raised life with Him? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.13-15] In verse 12, the new covenant mark of water in baptism buries us with Christ and raises us with Christ “through faith.” The timing of faith to this raised life made alive with Christ is now described. It is not when conscious faith was professed, but while we were still dead in our trespasses and the uncircumcision of our flesh. At that time, God made us alive with Christ, gifting us faith, forgiving all our trespasses, nailing it to the cross, and disarming the evil rulers and authorities. *What does your baptism rest upon – your profession of faith in sinful-uncircumcised flesh, or Christ’s finished work of His faithfulness in His perfect-sinless flesh? How has God’s gift of “faith” in baptism started in you, even while dead in your sins, long before a conscious profession was made by you? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on blessing the baptisms of Jason Ventura and Elena Ventura. *WELCOME to HOSANNA! – Warmest welcome to all of you, especially if you are visiting or re-visiting! [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 50)] "They Sent Them Off" (ACTS 13:1-3) (1.) [v.1] As Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem back to the flourishing Antioch Church, a group of five gifted prophets and teachers arose to continue building-up the community, which included Barnabas and Saul. They were all different ethnically, culturally, socio-economically, politically, yet they were united in exercising their different teaching gifts and prophetic gifts to build up the Lord’s Church. You too have a spiritual gift(s) that the Lord has entrusted to you. *What is that gift from the Holy Spirit? Are you exercising that gift independently and individually? How can you exercise your spiritual gift(s) corporately and edifyingly with other spiritually gifted Christians that complement you? How important is unifying your gift with the different gifts of others within the multi-gifted body of Christ, His Church? How is this unity preparing you to be sent together on the same mission as Christ’s body locally and globally? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.2a] While these five gifted prophets and teachers were worshipping and fasting, they heard the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking. *How is the Holy Spirit speaking to you while you are serving and worshipping Him, instead of before you start serving or worshipping Him? Why do we need to hear from the Holy Spirit before we are sent by the Holy Spirit? Rather than audible noise, how is the Holy Spirit heard through the written Word of God? Rather than a mystical voice, how has the Holy Spirit brought His pressing conviction of the heart through your conscience? How is the voice of the Holy Spirit heard through the voice of other spiritual leaders around you, who are preaching, encouraging, admonishing, rebuking, training, and correcting you? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.2b] The Holy Spirit says to set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which He had called them. *How is the Spirit calling you to be set apart in order to prepare to be sent out for His work? What do you need to be set apart from? What is the Spirit setting you apart for? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (4.) [v.3] Barnabas and Saul do not just get sent off without a commissioned blessing. The commissioning with the laying on of prayerful hands was vital for their mission ahead. *Are you seeking a prayerful commissioning from the whole body of Christ’s Church prior to a big move elsewhere, or acting independently on your own? How important is it that the Church is united around your decision to be sent off for the Spirit’s work? And are you being a blessing with prayerful hands for those called to be sent? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on guidance and growth for the churches and leaders to lead the Korean American community in North Dallas. Scripture: Romans 8:28 (ESV) And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 2 Timothy 1:8-9 (ESV) Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Prayer (by Deacon Jonathan Jeng): Heavenly Father, Today we come before You with heavy hearts as we pray for all the families, businesses, and communities affected by the recent shooting that has deeply shaken the Korean American community and so many around the area. Lord, we ask that Your loving presence surround every grieving family with comfort, strength, and hope during this painful time. Once again, we are reminded that this world is broken and filled with hurt, violence, and sorrow. Yet even in the darkness, we know that we are never abandoned because we have Your guidance, mercy, and everlasting love. Though the world is broken, our faith in You makes us whole. Father, remind us of the promise found in Romans 8:28 – that in all things You work for the good of those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. Sometimes good things fall apart so that better things may come together according to Your will. Help us to trust You even when we do not understand the pain before us. Teach us not to dwell only on earthly desires or personal ambitions, but to seek Your calling above all else. Your word reminds us that You have saved us and called us to a holy life, not because of anything we have done ourselves, but because of Your grace and glory. May we walk faithfully in that calling with humility and obedience. Father, renew our hearts daily and remind us that through Christ we are made new creations. Help us let go of our old identity, fears, bitterness, and brokenness, and instead live in hope and transformation that comes through You alone. Bring healing where there is pain, unity where there is division, and light where there is darkness. May Your love continue to guide the Korean American community, businesses, and all people toward compassion, love, and faith. In Jesus’s name we pray, Amen. *WELCOME to HOSANNA! – Warmest welcome to all of you, especially if you are visiting or re-visiting! Please let our Welcoming Team give you our welcoming gift! [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 49)] “Give God the Glory!” (ACTS 12:18-25) (1.) [v.18-20] It’s clear that Herod knew no other king than himself. When things didn’t go his own way, as with the escape of his prized prisoner (Peter), Herod did not hesitate to exercise the power of his order to put to death his guards for their failure. When Herod became angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, he enjoyed the spectacle of the multitudes pacifying his anger with persuasion and pleas for his favor, as he leveraged giving or withholding their food resources. *Are you a king? Then, why are you living and acting like one? How are you living in your own glory as your own king? Are you giving orders like Herod, or obeying orders from Jesus? Are you taking life like Herod, or giving life like Jesus? Do you desire for others to get on your side, or point others to Jesus’ side? How must Jesus be King through your life and lifestyle? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.21-23] Knowing no other king but himself, Herod dressed like a king and then took his seat on the throne like a king. Then, he delivered an oration like a king. As the people praised him for having the voice of a god, he did not deny it. Immediately, the Lord struck him down to his last breath and his body was eaten by worms because he did not give God the glory. *What glory are you taking away from God? Especially with your tongue, how does your speech glorify yourself instead of giving glory to the Lord Jesus Christ? How can we glorify God with our speech (see James 1:19 and 1 Peter 4:11)? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.24-25] Herod’s words were struck down, but God’s word increased and multiplied. New servants of the Word, like John Mark, were taken by Barnabas and Saul from Jerusalem back to their home base church in Antioch. *Is the word of God increasing or decreasing through you? Is God’s Word multiplying or declining through you? How is God calling you to live as servants (like Barnabas, Saul, and John Mark) instead of like kings through your life, lifestyle, words, and actions? How can you be part of increasing, multiplying, and glorifying the word of God through your life? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on Growing a Heart of Sharing the Gospel. Scripture: For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, (1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4) For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (ROMANS 1:16) Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. (2 TIMOTHY 4:2) Prayer (by Elder Patrick Liu): Father God, we thank you for the beauty of your gospel truth, how you were crucified, died, and buried and then you rose again three days later according to the Scriptures, saving us from the penalty of death as a result of our sin and reconciling us with Yourself. Help grow in us a heart of boldness to share this good news and perfect gift that has been given to us freely with those around us so that your saving grace can abound across the earth more and more. Prepare us to be able to speak truth in season and out of season with patience and teaching as we carry and proclaim this good news that has been shared to us. Thank you for yesterday’s blessed James life group gathering, and I pray you continue to bless the Agape life group gathering this coming Saturday. I pray for deeper conversations over your preached Word in our discussion group ministry during lunch and thank you for the birthdays in the month of May as we celebrate in our monthly dessert and birthday celebration ministry during lunch. In Jesus’ blessed and glorious name we pray, amen. |
