[The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 39)] What God Has Made Clean, Do Not Call Unclean: The Great Sheet of the Gospel (ACTS 10:9-22) (1.) [v.9-14] As Cornelius’ servants were on the way from Caesarea to Joppa to find Peter, the scene now shifts to Peter in Joppa who is praying at the housetop of Simon the Tanner’s home, around noontime (the sixth hour). As it was lunchtime, Peter became hungry. What happened while the food was being prepared (v.10-11)? Inside this great descending sheet from heaven, what did Peter see in it (v.12)? What did Peter hear to do from the Lord (v.13)? How did Peter respond to the Lord (v.14)? *[APPLY] Old Testament food laws differentiated Israelites from non-Israelites (see Leviticus 11 and Ezekiel 4:13-15). Why did Peter refuse the Lord’s command to eat all the animals in the great sheet from heaven? Like Peter, how have we sinfully differentiated what and who is “clean” and who is “unclean, common, unholy, profane, defiled” according to our own eyes? Eating and table fellowship represented deep communion, brotherhood, and compassion in the Lord. Who are you refusing the Lord’s table fellowship with? How is the Holy Spirit stirring up a hunger to give His hand of fellowship and compassion to those “unclean” in our own eyes, in the eyes of our church, and in the eyes of our culture and world? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.15-18] Far more important than animals in the great sheet are the souls of all God’s people. When the voice of the Lord came to Peter a second and third time, how did the Lord correct Peter (v.15-16)? Likewise, how was God sovereignly orchestrating this time to bring Peter to whom he saw as “unclean” (v.17-18)? *[APPLY] When has the Lord repeated His corrective Word to you because of your continual resistance? How has God divinely orchestrated a circumstance to bring you into Christ-centered fellowship with someone you once refused to give it to? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.19-22] How do Cornelius’ men confirm to Peter that the vision of the great sheet from heaven was about the gospel of Jesus Christ reaching all the nations of the world (v.19-22)? *[APPLY] Like Peter, if someone needing Christ desired for you to come to their home to speak about the risen Jesus, what would you say? *UPCOMING HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY TO YOU FROM OUR HOSANNA FAMILY! We celebrate you and love you in Christ so much! (*Let us know if we missed your birthday! We sincerely apologize) –
*KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers is postponed until next week, but pray for Holy Communion Sunday today & Great Commission Focus Weekend with missionary Cha next week.

(PHILIPPIANS 4:8) Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (1 PETER 1:8-9) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, though we cannot see each other today in-person, just as we have not seen Your Son yet, help our love for one another and for You to be ever growing and present. Though we do not see Christ now, we believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with His glory. Likewise, we cannot be with Your body today, but we believe in the creation of Your body at Hosanna, and rejoice with joy inexpressible at what You are accomplishing through us. We are obtaining the outcome of our faith, the salvation of our souls as we continue to gather together, virtually as today and communally in-person. Help us be Your Church even through this online worship today, to think like Jesus, to renew our mind in our words and actions to whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise – let this be the thoughts, words, and worshipful acts of our lives. We lift up to You the remainder of this month in January and the approaching February ministries. Bless today’s virtual worship gathering. Bless the discussions that will happen at the end of this livestream with friends and family at home. Bless the 1pm Officers gathering as they fellowship, plan, and prepare for future ministries. Bless Director Rachel Ko on her birthday this Thursday. We thank You for her devotion to serve and love your children. Keep her in good health to keep being Your presence and joy. Bless next Sunday’s holy communion with a deep gratitude for Jesus Christ at His table. Help us bring all to You – young to old – to Your table, and open our eyes to deeper self-examination that causes fruitful repentance towards godliness. We lift up to You all the new life that is growing in the womb, and all those praying for new life to come – in Your time and Your way, deliver them safely to us and answer the desires of all the longing hearts delighting in You. Prepare us for Missionary Cha’s visit. Challenge us with the Word and calling You have put on them. Keep our Hosanna Church away from the evil one, always armored and guarded in our hearts as the wellspring of life in Jesus Christ, in His risen Name we pray, Amen & amen. *MESSAGE: [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 38)] A Devout Man Who Feared God: The Calling of Cornelius to Christ (ACTS 10:1-8) Rev. Chester Chung 1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort, 2 a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God. 1 가이사랴에 고넬료라 하는 사람이 있으니 이달리야 부대라 하는 군대의 백부장이라 2 그가 경건하여 온 집안과 더불어 하나님을 경외하며 백성을 많이 구제하고 하나님께 항상 기도하더니 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.” 4 And he stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. 3 하루는 제 구 시쯤 되어 환상 중에 밝히 보매 하나님의 사자가 들어와 이르되 고넬료야 하니 4 고넬료가 주목하여 보고 두려워 이르되 주여 무슨 일이니이까 천사가 이르되 네 기도와 구제가 하나님 앞에 상달되어 기억하신 바가 되었으니 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5 And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter. 6 He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.” 7 When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him, 8 and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
Amazing grace How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost, but now I’m found Was blind, but now I see ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed My chains are gone I’ve been set free My God, my Savior has ransomed me And like a flood His mercy reigns Unending love, amazing grace The Lord has promised good to me His word my hope secures He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures My chains are gone I’ve been set free My God, my Savior has ransomed me And like a flood His mercy reigns Unending love, amazing grace The earth shall soon dissolve like snow The sun forbid to shine But, God who called me here below Will be forever mine Will be forever mine You are forever mine *CLOSING PRAYER & BENEDICTION: Rev. Chester Chung *AFTER-SERVICE BREAKING BREAD & DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: A Devout Man Who Feared God: The Calling of Cornelius to Christ (ACTS 10:1-8) “하나님을 경외하는 경건한 사람: 고넬료의 그리스도로 부르심” (사도행전 10장 1-8절) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (1.) [v.1-2] The scene of Acts now shifts from Joppa up northward to the coastal Roman city of Caesarea, named after the Emperor of the Roman Empire – Caesar Augustus. Who was there in Caesarea (v.1)? Although Caesarea was rampant with polytheism (belief in multiple gods) and the worship of the Roman Emperor/Caesar, what was different about this man (v.2)? Like Cornelius had done, how are you devoting to fear God alone with all your household in the midst of our world that mocks the God of the Bible? How is your fear of God shown through your giving of offerings/alms? How is your fear of God shown through your continual prayer life? Like Cornelius, how is Christ cultivating in us a fertile-soiled heart that is dissatisfied with ungodliness and drawn to a sincere godly life for Christ? (1.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.3-4] Although Cornelius had a holy fear for God, he did not know anything about the risen Son of God – King Jesus Christ. Therefore, God decides to appear to Cornelius in a vision so that he might retrieve Peter and be taught the full gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. What did Cornelius clearly see and hear in the vision (v.3)? What did the angel say about Cornelius’ prayers and his alms giving (v.4)? How has God needed to get your attention to see Him more clearly? Like God said of Cornelius’ prayers and alms, can God say the same about the sincerity of our prayers and the generosity in our giving? How has God reminded you that your prayers and generosity in giving have ascended to Him as a memorial and pleasing sacrifice? How is our spiritual discipline in these areas a means of fearing God fully in the whole gospel of Jesus Christ? (2.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.5-8] What did the angel command Cornelius to do and how were the instructions given in great detail (v.5-6)? When the angel departed, what did Cornelius do (v.7-8)? How is your quick obedience related to fearing God rightly? When has God desired for your quick obedience instead of delayed obedience? Why is it important to obey the Lord quickly? Like Cornelius, how has the Lord given you detailed instructions to obey? How can we obey God joyfully instead of begrudgingly? (3.) [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 36)] Full of Good Works and Grace: The Legacy of a Godly Woman (ACTS 9:36-43) (1.) [v.36-38] In Joppa, what was the disciple Tabitha known for (v.36)? Although she was a faithful, genuine, and generous disciple, what happened to Tabitha (v.37)? Because the community was so grieved and sorrowful over the death of Tabitha, what did the disciples in Joppa do upon hearing that Peter was nearby in the town of Lydda (v.38)? In your family… among your church family… among your neighbors… what are you known for in your character? Are we just talkers about doing good works and acts of charity for Christ, or are we truly doers of them like the disciple Tabitha was? “Charity” in this verse means the giving of alms – generous financial gifts and offerings of support. The disciple Tabitha evidenced this through the many garments/tunics she made to cloth the widows. How are you being good stewards of God’s financial entrustment to you? Does your giving reflect generosity or sparsity? Will the absence of your presence and your godly generosity be missed or go unnoticed? Will your absence bring godly grief and sorrow to God’s people because you are a visible image and reflection of the character of Christ? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.39-40] When Peter arrived at the upper room where Tabitha’s dead body lay, what were the widows doing and why (v.39)? What did Peter ask everyone to do (v.40)? Then, what did Peter do as he turned to the body of Tabitha (v.40)? How was Peter recalling the healing words of Jesus from Mark 5:41 and Luke 8:54? When you pass into glory, what are the “tunics and garments” you will leave behind, like Tabitha did? What are the words of Christ you will leave behind that can unleash spiritual power, like Jesus’ healing words did with Peter? How are you unlearning to lead with your own words and letting Jesus lead you with His divine Word? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.41-43] As the widows were reunited in fellowship with Tabitha, who was Peter uniting in fellowship for several days in Joppa (v.43)? Tabitha was resuscitated back to her old life only to die again. How will we be raised differently by Jesus Christ? *UPCOMING HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY TO YOU FROM OUR HOSANNA FAMILY! We celebrate you and love you in Christ so much! (*Let us know if we missed your birthday! We sincerely apologize) –
*KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on 2026 January Ministry Scripture: Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (JOHN 3:3) For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. (ROMANS 12:4-5) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (GALATIANS 3:28) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up to You the month of January 2026. Thank You for the blessed celebrations of birthdays today for our brother Justin Chao, sister Ashley Chung, and Director Trey Reynolds. We celebrate their birth, but so much more the new birth You have generated in them from the womb of the Kingdom of heaven. Truly, unless on is born again, we cannot see the kingdom of God. So we pray today our three souls will see more and more Your Kingdom come, Your will be done in their lives as they live out their new birth from above. Bless their families today with joy in Your presence. Bless our Elder Heather's birthday this Thursday as well. We praise You for the new life to come, the nourishing growth and healthy delivery of our new sister Gee. May Your hand rest upon the Gee’s and Deacon Gloria as they prepare for Your joy to come. We praise You for Your healing touch on our sister Aria's fever this week. Bless our breakout discussion groups and lunch fellowship today with deep conversations around Christ, His mind, and His Word. This Friday, bless and be with our AGAPE young adults & families life group gathering. Tomorrow, we thank You for the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who left us an imprint of what it means to be part of the one body in Christ, the endowment of Your image on all Your children, and the gospel that transcends racial and cultural barriers. May we never give in to discriminating one another for any reason or prejudice, but live into being the one body of Christ with many members. We may not all have the same function, but we still makeup Your Son’s one body, individually members of one another. Now in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male role and female role that separate and distinguish one more dominant than the other in both the home and church, but we are all one in Christ Jesus clothed with the character of Christ Jesus. Help us to submit to one another and love each other, as Christ has loved us, and as Christ has used Reverend King’s short life to show us, through our risen King and Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen & Amen. *WELCOME to HOSANNA! – *We hope you had a Christ-exalting Christmas and happy final Sunday of 2025! [The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 36)] Rise and Make Your Bed! Godly Stewardship of a Healed Life (ACTS 9:32-35) (1.) [v.32] After Saul had preached boldly the name of the Lord Jesus in Jerusalem and escaped safely to Tarsus, we return to the life of Peter. Because Peter remained in Jerusalem, he could have potentially met Saul, heard his preaching, and been influenced by his conversion and subsequent calling to take the gospel beyond the walls of Jerusalem (Paul says in Galatians 1:18 that he met Peter for 15 days, “Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days.”). For the most part, Peter did not move beyond Jerusalem. His ministry was confined to this city (see Acts 5:16). Yet, what was Peter doing that took him 30 miles west of Jerusalem to the city of Lydda? Why were there “saints” all the way out west of Jerusalem (remember the result of Saul’s ministry from the prior verse Acts 9:31)? As Peter traveled extensively and sacrificially to meet the saints in Lydda outside his own comfortable boundaries, how is the Lord calling you extensively and sacrificially to be with the saints of His Church outside your own comfortable boundaries? How is the Lord desiring for His gospel to go outside our own walls? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.33-34] As Peter traveled to Lydda, the Lord providentially led him to minister to a paralyzed brother in Christ, Aeneas, bedridden for eight years. With what words did Peter heal Aeneas and what did he tell Aeneas to do (v.34)? How has the Lord providentially led you to meet someone He desired for you to minister to or be ministered by? If Christ has truly healed you, what is the “bed” you need to make and rise from that has paralyzed you spiritually for years, as Aeneas had to do? What stewardship has God entrusted to your healed and restored life in Christ? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.35] When Aeneas immediately obeyed Peter’s words by rising to make his bed and preparing something to eat, what happened? The plain of Sharon is over 50 miles long. With just one act of obedience to Christ in stewarding your healed life, how can you influence your “plain of Sharon” to turn to Jesus? *UPCOMING HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY TO YOU FROM OUR HOSANNA FAMILY! *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on 2026 January Ministry Scripture: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (1 JOHN 1:7) For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (MATTHEW 18:20) And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (HEBREWS 10:24-25) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up to You the month of January 2026. Thank You for giving us new time, new blessings awaiting Your beloved Church. Thank you for bringing Reserve Elder Andrew Lee to Hosanna, his faithful example of Christ’s servanthood throughout all these years. May You continue to get Your glory through him and work powerfully through him to advance Your Kingdom through Your Church. Bless all the new year gatherings and informal fellowship times with our Pastor, for members to share their hearts, lives, and tears, advancing their walk with Christ. Bless our breakout discussion groups with Christ-exalting expositions and thoughts on Your living Word, edifying one another. Bless the dishwashing servants today with their selfless Christlike servanthood. Bless the staff today as they gather to dream more of Your Kingdom on earth through Hosanna. Be with the JAMES life group families as they regather this Saturday for a time of teaching, sharing their lives, and prayer. Give us joy in Your presence as we celebrate the birthdays of Ashley, Justin, and Director Trey. In all this, may we walk in the light, as Christ is our light, to have true fellowship with one another with the blood of Jesus cleansing us from all sin. For we know where two or more are gathered in the name of Jesus, You are here among us. So let us consider how we can stir up one another to love and good works. Let us not neglect to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encourage one another all the more as we see the Day of Christ’s return drawing nearer and nearer. In the risen name of Jesus Christ who is coming again while we draw nearer to one another again in His fellowship, Amen & amen. *WELCOME to HOSANNA & HAPPY 2026 NEW YEAR’S 1st LORD’S DAY! – *We hope you had a Christ-exalting Christmas and happy final Sunday of 2025! “Therefore I have Hope, Therefore I will Hope” (LAMENTATIONS 3:19-30) (1.) [v.19-24] The book of Lamentations is a collection of five poetic funeral songs of sorrow and mourning, which conveys the title of the book in “lament” which means “to wail, to mourn, to grieve, to despair, to weep.” The weeping prophet Jeremiah is mourning over the destruction of Jerusalem, the desecration of God’s temple of worship, and the exile of God’s people during the fall of the southern Kingdom of Judah by the Babylonian Empire in 586 BC. There was immense loss of life as the Babylonians cut off the food supply to the city, causing starvation. The holy temple of worship was looted and burned. Houses were ravaged and burned. The last king of Judah – King Zedekiah – was forced to watch the execution of his sons, then his eyes were removed to blind him, and he was taken to Babylon where he later died. This great suffering was like “wormwood and the gall” (v.19) – a bitter herb and poisonous substance, portraying the spiritual poison of idolatry and disobedience to the Lord that had come upon the people of God. Yet instead of ignoring this affliction, what does Jeremiah continue to do in his soul and recall to his mind (v.20-24)? How is it good to remember our difficult seasons without putting a false positivity on them? When our soul sinks to its lowest night, how can it be the start of the newest morning? How is Christ’s hope known in hopelessness? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.25-26] As Jeremiah’s afflicted soul turns into a hopeful soul by the unceasing steadfast love of the Lord, what habit does he learn is good for him to develop (v.25-26)? How are you learning to hope in the Lord by waiting upon the Lord? How is hoping in the Lord not in a hurry to solve our troubles and difficult times? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.27-30] What else does Jeremiah learn that is good from his hope in the Lord, especially concerning his youth (v.27-30)? How is God training you to hope in Him now during your spiritual youth to keep you from falling in spiritual adulthood? By hoping in the Lord, how is your tongue being held back? How is God’s hope training you to quietly surrender your whole self as His servant and receive the sufferings that Jesus Himself received, who was struck and insulted? *UPCOMING HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY TO YOU FROM OUR HOSANNA FAMILY! *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on thanksgiving for Mya Krief’s baptism & 2026 Ministry Year Scripture: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17) And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (REVELATION 21:5) But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (ISAIAH 40:31) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up to You this very first Sunday of 2026 and all the rest of the 51 Lord’s Day’s remaining. You are so faithful to give us another year, more time, to be wholly transformed as a new creation in Your only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. The old has passed away. Let us behold the new that is coming for us in 2026. Already, You have shown us the new life you are birthed in Your daughter Mya with the washing of the Holy Spirit in baptism. We are truly witnesses of Your hand and deep love resting upon her life. Through the waters of her baptism, as Mya has joined into the covenant family of the Lord’s Church, help us be faithful to our new sister in guiding her, staying spiritually accountable to her, and ensuring that she continues to grow in loving Jesus with all her heart, mind, soul, and strength. May her baptism reminds us of our washing in Your Spirit, and weigh it heavy in our hearts to know this new sister is now grafted into Christ’s body. Behold, You who are seated on the throne are making all things new for Mya and for all of us who are in Christ Jesus, because Your words are trustworthy and true. Whatever awaits us in 2026, keep us waiting for You, renewing our strength in You, and mounting up with wings like eagles to soar and run to You without growing wearing or faint. Today, bless our dessert ministry with sister Joy’s birthday and all the January birthdays. Bless Johann’s birthday this Thursday. Bless our kitchen ministry this Saturday morning and Sunday’s dishwash ministry. Bless our 1st AGAPE gathering for 2026 this Saturday. May all these be to the praise of Your glorious grace into 2026 and beyond, in the risen Lord and King Jesus Christ’s name we pray, Amen & amen. |
