[The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 50)] "They Sent Them Off" (ACTS 13:1-3) (1.) [v.1] As Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem back to the flourishing Antioch Church, a group of five gifted prophets and teachers arose to continue building-up the community, which included Barnabas and Saul. They were all different ethnically, culturally, socio-economically, politically, yet they were united in exercising their different teaching gifts and prophetic gifts to build up the Lord’s Church. You too have a spiritual gift(s) that the Lord has entrusted to you. *What is that gift from the Holy Spirit? Are you exercising that gift independently and individually? How can you exercise your spiritual gift(s) corporately and edifyingly with other spiritually gifted Christians that complement you? How important is unifying your gift with the different gifts of others within the multi-gifted body of Christ, His Church? How is this unity preparing you to be sent together on the same mission as Christ’s body locally and globally? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.2a] While these five gifted prophets and teachers were worshipping and fasting, they heard the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking. *How is the Holy Spirit speaking to you while you are serving and worshipping Him, instead of before you start serving or worshipping Him? Why do we need to hear from the Holy Spirit before we are sent by the Holy Spirit? Rather than audible noise, how is the Holy Spirit heard through the written Word of God? Rather than a mystical voice, how has the Holy Spirit brought His pressing conviction of the heart through your conscience? How is the voice of the Holy Spirit heard through the voice of other spiritual leaders around you, who are preaching, encouraging, admonishing, rebuking, training, and correcting you? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.2b] The Holy Spirit says to set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which He had called them. *How is the Spirit calling you to be set apart in order to prepare to be sent out for His work? What do you need to be set apart from? What is the Spirit setting you apart for? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (4.) [v.3] Barnabas and Saul do not just get sent off without a commissioned blessing. The commissioning with the laying on of prayerful hands was vital for their mission ahead. *Are you seeking a prayerful commissioning from the whole body of Christ’s Church prior to a big move elsewhere, or acting independently on your own? How important is it that the Church is united around your decision to be sent off for the Spirit’s work? And are you being a blessing with prayerful hands for those called to be sent? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on guidance and growth for the churches and leaders to lead the Korean American community in North Dallas. Scripture: Romans 8:28 (ESV) And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 2 Timothy 1:8-9 (ESV) Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Prayer (by Deacon Jonathan Jeng): Heavenly Father, Today we come before You with heavy hearts as we pray for all the families, businesses, and communities affected by the recent shooting that has deeply shaken the Korean American community and so many around the area. Lord, we ask that Your loving presence surround every grieving family with comfort, strength, and hope during this painful time. Once again, we are reminded that this world is broken and filled with hurt, violence, and sorrow. Yet even in the darkness, we know that we are never abandoned because we have Your guidance, mercy, and everlasting love. Though the world is broken, our faith in You makes us whole. Father, remind us of the promise found in Romans 8:28 – that in all things You work for the good of those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. Sometimes good things fall apart so that better things may come together according to Your will. Help us to trust You even when we do not understand the pain before us. Teach us not to dwell only on earthly desires or personal ambitions, but to seek Your calling above all else. Your word reminds us that You have saved us and called us to a holy life, not because of anything we have done ourselves, but because of Your grace and glory. May we walk faithfully in that calling with humility and obedience. Father, renew our hearts daily and remind us that through Christ we are made new creations. Help us let go of our old identity, fears, bitterness, and brokenness, and instead live in hope and transformation that comes through You alone. Bring healing where there is pain, unity where there is division, and light where there is darkness. May Your love continue to guide the Korean American community, businesses, and all people toward compassion, love, and faith. In Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
