[The Gospel According to the Acts of the Apostles – THE CHURCH IN ACTION (part 45)] "Every One According to His Ability Determined to Give" (ACTS 11:27-30) (1.) [v.27-28] The love of the Jerusalem Church leaders for their new Christian brothers and sisters at the Antioch Church is apparent. Not only did they send their best teachers to Antioch – Barnabas and Saul – but also their prophets to edify them with the spiritual gift of prophecy like Agabus, who foretold the natural disaster of a coming great famine over all the world. Historically, this famine, a series of poor harvests and subsequent scarcity, is recorded in the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius from A.D. 41 to 54. What an amazing verification and fulfillment of Agabus’ foretold prophetic word to the Antioch Christians! *Who is the Agabus that the Lord has sent to you through a teaching, admonishment, foretelling by the Spirit to warn you of spiritual danger and help you prepare for sanctifying action? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2.) [v.29] As the Jerusalem Church expressed compassionate generosity in sending their teachers and prophets to Antioch, now the Antioch Church reciprocates their loving concern by sending sacrificial relief funds to help their Jerusalem Christian brothers and sisters prepare for the great famine ahead. *How have you been a recipient of Christ’s compassionate generosity? How is Jesus Christ calling you to reciprocate that selfless and sacrificial generosity to one another, especially to His body, the local Church? How is your discipline in giving, particularly in the tithe and additional offerings, a visible portrait of your worship to God and compassion for His body? Like the Antioch givers, are you determined to give according to the ability God has entrusted to you? What is that ability? Are you being faithful with it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (3.) [v.30] Instead of individually and personally giving to whomever and through whatever means they desire, how do the Antioch Christians teach us how to collect our giving and where to send our giving? How are you entrusting your giving to the elders and spiritual leaders of the Church as a display of godly humility and faith? *KINGDOM EXPANSION PRAYER – This week’s Kingdom expansion prayers will focus on week 5 of this Lenten season devotional theme, “Watching and Waiting” Scripture: And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (MATTHEW 26:40-41) But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (ISAIAH 40:31) Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. (1 PETER 5:7-10) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, as we enter the 6th week of this holy Lenten season prior to the final Passion Week, show us what it means to be “Watching and Waiting” for Jesus Christ, on drawing nearer to the first coming and anticipating with blessed hope of the second coming of Your only Son. He has come to die and rise again, and He will come again with the clouds, with every eye seeing Him, as the First and the Last, who is, who was, and who is to come, our almighty Savior and Lord. Strengthen us to watch and pray instead of relax and sleep. May our prayerful dependence on Jesus keep us from entering independently into all temptation. Our spirit is indeed willing, but our flesh is so weak. By the power of prayer, keep our anxieties cast upon You and Your care for us. Sober our minds and keep our eyes watchful as the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking to devour. Strengthen us to resist the devil by being firm in faith, knowing the same kinds of sufferings are being experienced by our brotherhood and sisterhood at Hosanna and the global Church around the world. For after we suffer a little while on earth, You Yourself will restore us, confirm us, strengthen us, and establish us by Your grace and glory in Your only Son. So Lord, we wait upon You! As we wait, our strength is renewed upon You! Let us mount up with wings like eagles, run and not be weary, walk and not faint, for Your strength will arise within us! Bless our fasting and prayer this week and prepare us for Palm Sunday next week. Bless our breakfast fellowship with many to come earlier and on-time to service. Bless our breakout discussions during lunch with fruitful reflections on Your Word. Bless the Agape life gathering this Saturday with the holy truths of Ephesians. Fill all the needs for servants to serve You on Easter and VBS and the approaching April tables/chairs setup ministry. Bless all the students on spring break with renewed rest and strength. Bless all the precious life growing in the womb among us and Your creation sister Selene in nurture and growth. We watch and wait for You at all times, risen Lord Jesus Christ, Amen & Amen.
