Scripture: “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (MATTHEW 6:16-18) Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (MATTHEW 4:1-4) “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. (JOEL 2:12-13) Prayer (by Pastor Chester): Heavenly Father, we lift up to You this sacred time of preparation for forty days leading up to Easter, preparing our hearts and live again to behold the resurrection of Your Son. According to Your great mercy, You have caused us to be born again into a living hope through Easter. Refresh us again and again that Jesus has risen and is alive from the dead, so also we too can rise today and will rise at the last day to be with Him. Let us not be gloomy, but refigure our faces through your gift of fasting to hunger for the risen Christ again. Let fasting not be done for the eyes of others, but for You alone in secret. Give us a refresh hunger and thirst to be led by Your Holy Spirit, even into the wilderness. Just as Jesus fasted forty days and forty nights, although His hunger drove Him to His physical limits, He did not turn stones into loaves of bread to obey the Tempter, but to obey Your living word. Let us not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from Your mouth through the Scriptures. Even now, Lord, let us return to You with all our hearts with fasting, with weeping, with mourning. Let us offer our hearts and not our garments. Let us look inside and not just live for the outside. Let us return to You as our God alone, for You are gracious. You are merciful. You are slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Lift us up to Your Son’s resurrected life, through Jesus Christ risen from the dead, our powerful Savior and Lord we pray, amen & amen.
